FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

about RV window shades

  • When can I expect my order to ship?
Custom orders are handmade to your specifications by local craftspeople. Orders are currently shipping within 3-4 weeks.
  • Can I pick up my shades in person?
If you're in the Reno/Sparks, NV area, you sure can! Contact us for more information if you'd like to pick up your shades in person.
  • My RV is set up at a park far away from my house. Can you ship my shades directly to the park?
We suggest contacting your park management or camp host to find out if they'll receive packages for you. If they're amenable to accept and hold them for you, we'd be happy to ship your shades directly to the park. Keep in mind the box may be rather large.
  • How should I store my shades when they're not in use?
Simply remove the shade from the wall, and roll it up for storage. We recommend keeping your shades in a fabric or plastic bag to keep them free from dirt and moisture. Fabric is best because it allows the shade to breath, and condensation will not build up like it does in a plastic bag.
  • How should I clean my shades?
Use a vacuum to remove dust and debris from your shades periodically to keep them fresh longer. You can also machine wash your shades! Use cold water and a gentle detergent, with no fabric softener. Line dry or dry on a low heat, delicate setting. Do not iron.
  • Does it matter which dimension is the length or the width?
Yes it does! The attachment method you choose will be placed along the top of the shade, so it's important to make sure the width is the horizontal direction and the height is the vertical direction.
  • Do you offer custom fabric options?
Unfortunately we cannot offer custom fabric options at this time. Fabric is tricky stuff. To get the best appearance, durability, and washability, you have to select the correct fiber, weave, and weight. Because of that, we've chosen a high quality selection of different colors that will fit any style and taste.

  • Why are Roaming Shades better than foil insulation?
Roaming Shades have an R value of 7.3, which is even better than the insulation built into your RV walls! Our shades are covered in beautiful, neutral colored fabrics to coordinate with any decor. Roaming Shades can be rolled up for easy storage, without causing the insulation or mylar to crack and deteriorate.
  • Can you help me figure out what size to order?
Of course, we'd be happy to help! Contact us at info@roamingshades.com and include a clear picture of your measurements. Let us know how much overhang you would like, and we'll do the rest. You're also welcome to contact us if you would simply like to confirm your calculations, or if you're trying to decide between two options.
  • What if I don't want to put holes in my walls?
There are several adhesive options for hanging your shades if you don't want to put holes in the walls. Be warned, however, that adhesives can be hit or miss when it comes to staying put. We offer only the best options for adhesive hangers, but there can still be issues with them sticking over the years because of the extreme temperature swings that RVs and campers go though. To optimize your changes, be sure to prep your surface carefully before hanging adhesive hooks or hangers. Clean the surface thoroughly then wipe it with isopropyl alcohol or an alcohol wipe. Allow to dry, then hang your adhesive strip. Wait about 24 hours before putting any weight on the hanger. This gives it a chance to bond properly. For any questions about hanging your shades, just contact us!
  • What tools do I need to install my shades?
Adhesive options require nothing but some cleaning fluid, isopropyl alcohol, and a clean rag or paper towel to prep the surface. If you choose a screw-in option, you'll need a power drill with a 1/16" bit to drill pilot holes. For cup hooks, use your fingers and a pair of pliers to twist the hook in place (hint: cover the plier tips with a rag to prevent them from scratching your hooks). For snap screws, use a Phillips head screwdriver to install.
  • Will your shades work with valences?
Absolutely! When you're measuring your shades, also measure the inside width under your valence. Calculate your overhang as usual, but make sure that number is not wider than the inside width of the valence. This will allow your shades to fit nicely beneath the valence. We recommend using an adhesive hanging option if you do want to mount your shades beneath valences. This will be easier to install, and you won't have to fit a drill at an awkward angle under the valence.
  • How do I hang adhesive fasteners?
Be sure to prep your surface carefully before hanging adhesive hooks or hangers. Clean the surface thoroughly then wipe it with isopropyl alcohol or an alcohol wipe. Allow to dry, then hang your adhesive strip. Wait about 24 hours before putting any weight on the hanger. This gives it a chance to bond properly.
  • Why not offer magnets?
Magnets are handy when attaching things to steel. Quite a few RV window frames are made from aluminum, however, and magnets won't stick. Even if they could stick, our research indicates that your shades would have a tendency to fall down when traveling down the road or when you bump into them.
